A good watch can last for decades if you look after it. Here are a few simple habits that keep any wristwatch — automatic or quartz — running well and looking new.

1. Keep it clean

Wipe the case and bracelet with a soft microfiber cloth every few days. For steel bracelets, an occasional rinse with lukewarm water and a soft toothbrush removes dirt from the links (only if the watch is water resistant and the crown is screwed or pushed in).

2. Respect the water resistance rating

A 30m rating means splash resistant, not swim-proof. Avoid hot showers and saunas, and never operate the crown or pushers under water.

3. Wind and wear automatics regularly

Automatic watches are powered by your wrist movement. If you do not wear one every day, wind it gently by hand or use a watch winder so the oils stay evenly spread.

4. Avoid magnets and shocks

Keep your watch away from speakers, phone cases with magnets and laptop lids, and take it off for heavy sports.

5. Service and battery changes

Replace quartz batteries promptly when the second hand starts jumping in 4-second steps, and have mechanical movements serviced every 4–5 years.

Leather straps: keep them dry and away from perfume; rotate straps to extend their life.
